Sony’s Xperia 1: A flagship phone after so long

The golden days Sony had with Xperia.

Sony is all set to return to the market with its new flagship phone Sony Xperia 1.

Once upon a time, Sony was a brand leader not just in TV manufacturing but in mobile manufacturing also. If you remember Sony Bravia, I am sure you have heard a lot about its flagship phones as Xperia also. Not anymore. Nothing is going well with Sony mobile division. With firm control over the smartphone market, Chinese companies are the market leaders these days. Sony is losing it and losing it fast. Due to constant loss-making, Sony has already laid its half of the workforce engaged in Smartphone making in March, as reported. This is because the company is not able to sustain the onslaught of Chinese companies in its niche. Chinese companies have significantly brought down the prices of mobile handsets with their cost saving, cheap labor, and aggressive marketing strategies. In contrast to Chinese companies smartphone, sales of Sony is dropped by 50 percent in the last year. Sony sold just one-sixth of the devices last year it sold five years back. That is really worrisome for the company.

New fervor with Xperia 1

But the company hasn’t lost its hope yet. Having learned enough from losses, Sony seems to believe in focusing on its strength now.

We have been knowing Sony as the torchbearer in the TV manufacturing industry. Sony is still best in 4K display TVs. To gain its lost glory in the smartphone market, Sony has gambled on this strength of 4K.  The company is attempting to start fresh with its flagship phone Xperia  1. The biggest strength of Sony is its 4K display technology. Sony wants to stand in the competitive market with Xperia 1. To bring the 4K effect to its full capacity, Xperia  1 features the world´s first 21:9 CinemaWide 4K HDR OLED display and a pro-quality triple lens camera system.

Not many of us know that  21:9 aspect ratio is the original format for movies and still is the film industry standard.  A regular 16:9 screen ratio which most of the mobile have, isn’t able to show most movies in the way they are meant to be seen. Additionally. A bigger ratio screen lets you see more of the apps and content.

world’s first 4K OLED experience: most talked feature of Xperia 1

Honestly, I am not sure about the 4K experience in a relatively small display of Xperia 1’s 6.1 inch screen. Xperia1’s 4K HDR OLED display has the same aspect ratio as the cinema but the screen in the cinema is fairly big and 4K gives a real viewing experience there. Also, a collaboration with CineAlta professional imaging engineers means it can reproduce colors as directors of the movies desired. Additionally, in ‘Creator Mode’ the Xperia  1 uses industry-leading technology to ensure consistent color reproduction.Xperia1 - Sony’s Xperia 1: A flagship phone after so long

Camera: Xperia 1

A  triple lens camera system gives this phone a big advantage over its rivals with exceptional imaging capabilities. Sony has its own camera technology which they call as Alpha professional technology. they have brought the same technology in Xperia 1 phone. It has RAW noise reduction for clear images in low light and precision focus for striking portraits. It includes the world’s first Eye AF in a smartphone and up to 10fps AF/AE tracking technology. These features make this phone as a professional mobile camera system to much of the delight of an average user.

the Xperia 1 has three camera lenses of 16mm, 26mm and a 52mm lens for different fields of view. All three cameras have a 12MP sensor for exceptional detail. A specially developed UI helps you in choosing the right lens as per the situation and your object of the scene.

With Cinema Pro you can record cinematic movies the way you want to in Xperia 1. Sony digital motion picture camera engineers worked with Xperia engineers to set LOOK color setting, letting you choose the look and feel of each scene.

Dolby sound Audio: will Xperia 1 pass test?

The famous Dolby sound Audio is Sony’s in-house sound system. Dolby Atmos sound system creates an amazing audio experience with multi-dimensional sound that flows above and around you. This is something you have seen in multiplexes also. Again I don’t know how much a phone should be able to create that effect?

Having said that, with all features as Sony has planned for Xperia 1, it would be interesting to see how people take this handset which is scheduled to be launched on July 12.
